Tashilhunpo Monastery

Founded in 1447, Tashilhunpo Monastery spreads across the foot of a hillside in Shigatse. It is a major Gelug monastery and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. Golden roofs, red walls, religious halls and stupas form an extensive complex. Its large Maitreya statue, murals and thangkas are among its best-known treasures.
